Responsible Travel

Tourism is one of the most important and largest industries on the planet. It employs more people worldwide than any other, with millions of families relying on tourism for their daily needs. Of course there are negatives attached.

The last few decades have been dotted with disaster stories where tourism has resulted in over-development, destruction of environments and in cultural misunderstandings and mistrust. It has also recently been embroiled in the debate about global warming and carbon emissions caused by flying. We believe that our type of small group, positive impact tourism can bring benefits to many communities, help preserve the environments we travel to see, and provide real and positive social exchanges.

Benefits can be obvious in parts of the developing world where the income we provide can mean the difference between economic survival and poverty. However, even in Europe, tourism can help stabilise rural communities by providing much needed employment and give powerful economic reasons to preserve shrinking natural environments.

India, The Land Beyond Expectations

Noise, people, deserts, teeming markets, the Taj Mahal, tigers, mountains and a dazzling coastline are some of the many facets that make up the vast country of India. Travel in India is always an unforgettable experience, not always for the right reasons, but the rewards are huge: dawn at the Taj in Agra, viewing tigers from elephants in Bandhavgarh, the backwaters of Kerala, the magnificent mountains in Himachal Pradesh or Ladakh and of course the food.

Expect the unexpected. India evokes emotion like no other place - drama, passion and Bollywood style romance. Few countries can offer can offer such cultural and geographical diversity for adventure holidays: from the semi-desert of Rajasthan to the tropical delights of Goa and Kerala.

Focus on Bhutan

Holidays to Bhutan. The scenery is awesome with steep forested hills and misty mountains rising from fast flowing rivers. But it is the fascinating culture that makes Bhutan unique. Bhutan is one of the very few areas in the Himalaya where the traditional way of life survives unchanged by the passage of time. The unusual architecture and national dress demonstrate the people's national pride and governmental policies such as GNH (Gross National Happiness) are evident in the people’s manner. The superb Dzongs (fortresses) dotted in the valleys and on hilltops are full of priceless religious artifacts and many are still active monasteries. The colourful Paro festival (March) and Thimpu festival (October) provide fascinating and genuine cultural spectacles; it's a good idea to plan your time in Bhutan to coincide with one of these events. In addition, Bhutan's pristine beauty and culture warrant great holiday options all year round.

Serious Adventure

Serious Adventure
A number of our trips delve off-the-beaten-track to explore out-of-the-way locations, while others visit well-known sites but involve an extended element of roughing it en route. The journey on these trips is not just about ticking off sites and attractions, but also about the adventure of exploring new landscapes, cultures and customs. Some are in purpose built expedition vehicles, allowing self-sufficient travel, and require an element of ‘mucking in’ as you will often be asked to help out with group tasks, while others require specialist skills to conquer some of the worlds highest peaks or most hostile environments.

Take a closer look at the holidays listed below. Be warned they're certainly tough!

Food and Drink - Italy

When looking to know more of European art and society, there is no better place to start than Tuscany, thanks to its fine Renaissance cities, beautiful rolling countryside and outstanding Chianti wine. The landscape of southern Tuscany fulfils all expectations, with mediaeval hilltop villages and cypress-lined avenues snaking through vineyards. We spend the week in a beautiful family-run Tuscan farmhouse, which has provided outstanding country hospitality for over twenty years. Only a short distance from the well-preserved hilltop town of San Gimignano, Voltrona continues to produce its own wine, which we taste over the week. There is also plenty of time to relax, wander amid the seductive countryside, explore ancient hill forts, take in the landmarks of Siena and sample some of the best Chianti around.
